Our employee spotlight this week is on Lucy Grant, our Chief of Staff. Lucy describes her role as “greasing the wheels,” helping Adfin move faster and more effectively - and we couldn’t agree more. Whether she’s chatting to customers, crunching data, or jumping into cross-functional projects, Lucy’s already made a huge impact since joining. Let's get to know her some more!
What inspired you to pursue a career as a Chief of Staff?
Chief of Staff is one of those titles that can mean very different things depending on the company. At Adfin, I think of my role as “greasing the wheels”—picking up projects that don’t clearly fall under product, engineering, or sales, but are still crucial to helping us move quickly and in the right direction.
One day I might be chatting with customers about how they’re using a new feature, the next I’m writing SQL queries, and the next I’m knee-deep in Excel working on our forecasts. It’s a total cliché, but the variety is what makes it fun. I started my career in consulting, which has been great training for the kind of first-principles thinking I use every day in this role.
Why did you decide to join Adfin?
I’d worked with several of Adfin’s founding team in a previous role, so I already knew that the team was extremely smart, ambitious and really understood what needed solving for small businesses when it came to accepting payments. It was also a great opportunity for me to join a company in its early stages. I’d been part of a few scale-ups before, but I was really excited about being there in the early days to build the foundations of a generational business.
What’s the most interesting or challenging project you’ve worked on so far?
My first task since joining has been working on our activation journey - understanding what our customers experience when they start using Adfin, and figuring out what metrics really matter to track and improve that experience. It’s been the perfect way to get to know the product through the eyes of our users, and a fun mix of analysing data and speaking directly with our customers.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In a past life, I played team sports to an international level, so staying active and getting outside is still really important to me. These days, I run and lift weights to keep fit, and dabble in a bunch of other sports like padel, surfing, and sailing that I’m overly enthusiastic and competitive about, even if I’m not especially good at them!
What’s your favourite book, movie, or TV show?
Stoner, by John Williams
Big thanks to Lucy for sharing her story!
